Places To Visit in Lonavala

Lonavala sits 625 metres above sea level in the Western Ghats and packs more attractions per square kilometre than almost any other hill station near Pune and Mumbai. Here's your complete guide to its best places.

Bhushi Dam

The postcard image of Lonavala. The stone dam has broad steps that transform into a rushing waterfall during monsoon. Families wade through ankle-to-knee deep water on the steps. Get here by 9 AM on weekends to avoid the rush. Location: 2 km from Lonavala bus stand.

Tiger's Leap (Tiger Point)

A dramatic cliff edge jutting out over a 650-metre valley. On clear days you can see the entire Khandala valley and on cloudy days the clouds drift right past you. The viewpoint has a small railing and a tea stall. Location: 6 km from Lonavala on the old Mumbai–Pune highway.

Karla Caves

A UNESCO-listed ancient Buddhist monastery carved into basalt rock in the 2nd century BC. The main Chaitya (prayer hall) is 40 metres long with ornately carved pillars and a wooden ceiling. There's also a Ekvira Devi temple nearby that's a popular pilgrimage spot. Location: 11 km from Lonavala, near Karla village.

Bhaja Caves

Twenty-two rock-cut caves set against a forested hillside. The main cave has 18 carved pillars and there's a cluster of stupas (Buddhist reliquary mounds) inside. A seasonal waterfall flows next to the complex during monsoon. Less crowded than Karla. Location: 12 km from Lonavala.

Rajmachi Fort

Twin forts — Shrivardhan and Manaranjan — sitting above the Ulhas river valley. The fort has a small village, ancient temples and sweeping views across the Sahyadris. The trek from Udhewadi village is 7 km one way. Location: 15 km from Lonavala.

Lonavala Lake

A calm reservoir in the centre of town, good for an evening walk. The lake is full and reflective from August through November. Paddle boats available seasonally. Location: Near the railway station.

Kune Falls

One of the highest waterfalls in Maharashtra at 200 metres, flowing in three tiers. Located near Khandala, about 5 km from Lonavala. Best viewed from the road or from the viewpoint above — the trail down is steep. Monsoon only.

Duke's Nose

A rocky cliff shaped like a nose, overlooking Khandala valley. A popular beginner trek starting from near Khandala station. The climb takes about 1.5 hours and the plateau at the top is perfect for a picnic. Location: Khandala, 3 km from Lonavala.

Imagicaa Theme Park

If you're with kids or want a full day of entertainment, Imagicaa is 45 minutes from Lonavala toward Mumbai on the expressway. India's premier theme park with rides, a water park and a snow park. Location: Khopoli exit, Mumbai–Pune Expressway.

Sunset Point, Khandala

A popular viewpoint overlooking the Khandala valley that turns golden at dusk. Gets very crowded on weekends — best visited on a weekday or early evening. Free entry. Location: Khandala, 3 km from Lonavala.
