Things To Do in Mahabaleshwar

At 1372 metres, Mahabaleshwar is Maharashtra's highest hill station and the source of the Krishna river. Famous for its strawberries, scenic viewpoints and colonial-era charm, here's how to spend your time.

1. Strawberry Picking

Mahabaleshwar produces 80% of India's strawberries. Between November and May, many farms open for pick-your-own strawberry experiences. A flat fee (₹200–400) gets you access to the rows and you eat as you go. The freshest strawberries you'll ever taste. Look for farms along the Panchgani–Mahabaleshwar road.

2. Boating on Venna Lake

Venna Lake is the heart of Mahabaleshwar town. Paddle boats, rowboats and speedboats are available by the hour. The lake is surrounded by a walking path lined with stalls selling corn, strawberries and chikki. A classic Mahabaleshwar experience for families.

3. Elephant's Head Point Trek

A short but rewarding trek to a viewpoint shaped like an elephant's head. The trail passes through dense shola forest and emerges at a cliff edge with panoramic views of the Arthur Seat valley. About 1 hour return, moderate difficulty.

4. Horse Riding

Horse riding is one of Mahabaleshwar's most popular activities — dozens of horses are available near Wilson Point and Venna Lake for short rides. ₹200–400 for a 15-minute ride. Longer trail rides through the forest can be arranged.

5. Wilson Point (Sunrise Point)

The highest point in Mahabaleshwar at 1439 metres, Wilson Point is the best place in the region to watch sunrise. The view spans multiple valleys and on clear days reaches to the Konkan coast. Arrive by 6 AM — entry is restricted after sunrise.

6. Arthur Seat

Called the "Queen of all points," Arthur Seat overlooks a deep valley on three sides. The famous "Needle Hole Rock" and "Echo Point" are nearby. A peaceful spot away from the main tourist crowds.

7. Mapro Garden

A fruit processing plant and garden that's become a major Mahabaleshwar attraction. Sample fresh strawberry products — jams, crushes, ice creams and the famous strawberry with cream. Also has a chocolate factory section. Free entry.

8. Pratapgad Fort Trek

About 24 km from Mahabaleshwar, Pratapgad was built by Shivaji Maharaj and is historically significant as the site of the famous battle with Afzal Khan. The fort is well-preserved with multiple cannon bastions, a temple and exceptional valley views.
