Things To Do in Lonavala

Lonavala is one of the most popular weekend getaways from both Pune (65 km) and Mumbai (95 km). Nestled in the Sahyadri hills, this hill station comes alive during the monsoon and offers a cool escape through winter. Here are the best things to do when you visit.

1. Visit Bhushi Dam

Bhushi Dam is Lonavala's most visited spot — and for good reason. During monsoon, water gushes over the steps of the dam creating a natural waterfall that people wade through. It gets crowded on weekends, so arrive early. Entry is free.

2. Trek to Tiger's Leap (Tiger Point)

Tiger's Leap is a cliff that overlooks a dramatic 650-metre drop into a valley. The short trek to the viewpoint takes about 20 minutes and the views across the Sahyadri range are outstanding, especially in the fog during monsoon. Located about 6 km from Lonavala town.

3. Della Adventure Park

Della Adventure Park is one of India's largest adventure parks with over 75 activities — zip-lining, ATV rides, bungee jumping, go-karting, and more. Great for groups and families. Plan for at least half a day. Book tickets in advance on weekends.

4. Karla and Bhaja Caves

These ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves date back to the 2nd century BC. Karla Caves house one of the largest early Buddhist prayer halls in India, with intricately carved pillars. Bhaja Caves nearby has 22 rock-cut chambers and beautiful waterfalls during monsoon. Both are about 11 km from Lonavala.

5. Rajmachi Fort Trek

The Rajmachi fort trek is ideal for serious trekkers. The base village Udhewadi is about 15 km from Lonavala. The fort sits at 927 metres and offers stunning views of the Sahyadri range, Ulhas river valley and twin bastions of Shrivardhan and Manaranjan. Best done October through February.

6. Ryewood Park and Shivalik Garden

A peaceful garden perfect for a morning walk or an evening stroll. The garden has a small lake and is a favourite with local families. Free entry.

7. Wax Museum Lonavala

India's only wax museum outside of Delhi and Kolkata, with lifelike wax figures of celebrities, leaders and historical figures. Good for a couple of hours especially if you're with kids.

8. Lonavala Lake

A scenic reservoir in the heart of town, Lonavala Lake is ideal for a short walk around the banks. Not great for swimming but perfect for a sunset view. The lake looks its best right after the monsoon season when it's full.

9. Duke's Nose Trek

Named for its resemblance to the Duke of Wellington's nose, this rock formation offers a popular beginner-friendly trek. The trail starts from Khandala and takes about 1.5 hours. Panoramic views of Khandala valley await at the top.

10. Bushi Dam to Valvan Dam Walk

The 3 km stretch between the two dams makes for a scenic walk through forests and alongside streams. If you want to get away from Lonavala's crowds, this trail is perfect.

Shopping: Buy the Famous Chikki

No Lonavala trip is complete without picking up chikki — the hard peanut-and-jaggery sweet that the town is famous for. Maganlal Chikki on the old Mumbai–Pune highway is the most popular stop.

Best Time to Do These Activities

Most activities are available year-round, but Bhushi Dam and waterfall treks are best during monsoon (June–September). Fort treks and cave visits are most comfortable in October through February when it's cool and dry.
