Things To Do in Velhe

Velhe is one of Pune's best-kept secrets — a remote tehsil in the Sahyadris with dramatic forts, dense forests, seasonal waterfalls and almost no tourist crowds. If you want the real Sahyadri experience without the Lonavala chaos, Velhe is it.

1. Trek to Rajgad Fort

Rajgad ("King's Fort") was the capital of the Maratha Empire for 26 years under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It sits at 1395 metres and is one of the largest forts in Maharashtra. The trek from Pali village takes 2–3 hours through dense forest. The summit has three distinct sub-forts (Balekilla, Sanjivani Machi, Padmavati Machi), ancient water cisterns and stunning 360-degree views across the Sahyadris. Best October through February.

2. Trek to Torna Fort

Torna Fort (Prachandagad) was the first fort captured by Shivaji Maharaj at age 16. At 1403 metres, it is one of the highest forts in Maharashtra. The 3-hour trek from Velhe village is challenging and deeply rewarding — ancient temples, deep cisterns and panoramic views in every direction.

3. Madhe Ghat Waterfall

One of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Pune district, Madhe Ghat comes alive during and after monsoon (July–October). The waterfall drops dramatically into a forested gorge and the surrounding landscape — dense jungle, mist and the sound of rushing water — is breathtaking. The approach road itself is a scenic ghat drive. Best visited July through September when the flow is at its peak.

4. Stargazing

Velhe has some of the darkest skies within driving distance of Pune — minimal light pollution and high elevation make it one of the best spots for naked-eye stargazing in the region. On clear nights (October through March are best), the Milky Way is clearly visible. Several CosmicStays properties here have open lawns or terraces ideal for a night under the stars.

5. Birdwatching

The forests of Velhe tehsil, particularly along the Nira river valley and around the fort base trails, are excellent for birdwatching. Species regularly seen include Malabar whistling thrush, crested serpent eagle, Indian pitta (monsoon), grey-headed canary flycatcher, tickell's blue flycatcher and various sunbirds. Early morning (6–8 AM) walks near forest edges and stream banks are most productive.

6. Neelkantheshwar Temple Trek

A forested trail leading to an ancient Shiva temple in the hills above Velhe. The path through shola forest is atmospheric and peaceful, particularly beautiful in early morning mist.

7. Gunjavane Village Walk

Traditional tribal villages where life has changed little over centuries. A morning walk through Gunjavane or surrounding hamlets — ideally with a local guide arranged by your host — offers a genuine glimpse into rural Maharashtrian life.

8. River Camping on the Nira

The Nira river flows through the Velhe valley and several operators offer overnight riverside camping on its banks. Bonfires, clear skies and the sound of the river make for an exceptional night.
