Things To Do in Pawna

Pawna Lake is famous for lakeside camping and stunning fort views, but there's more to do here than just sit by the water (though that alone is worth the trip).

1. Lakeside Camping and Bonfire

Tent camping on the banks of Pawna Lake with a bonfire and open sky is the signature Pawna experience. Dozens of campsites and several CosmicStays villas offer this setup. The star-filled sky over the lake is extraordinary on clear winter nights.

2. Kayaking and Paddleboarding

Several activity centres around the lake offer kayaking and paddleboarding. Early morning is the best time — the water is calm and the forts across the lake are reflected perfectly in the still surface.

3. Trek to Tikona Fort

Tikona (meaning 'triangle' in Marathi) is a beautifully compact fort with a distinctive triangular peak rising directly from the lake's edge. The 45-minute trek is steep but short, and the views from the top — across Pawna Lake with Tung Fort in the background — are among the best in the Sahyadris.

4. Trek to Tung Fort

Tung Fort sits on a rocky outcrop above Pawna Lake with 360-degree views of the Sahyadri range. Slightly easier than Tikona, the trail starts from Tung village. Best done in the early morning before it gets warm.

5. Visit Lohagad and Visapur Forts

Two adjoining hillforts about 20 km from Pawna Lake. Lohagad is a popular moderate trek with impressive ramparts and tunnels. Visapur is less visited and more challenging. Both accessible from the base village of Bhaje, near Karla. Can be done as a day trip from Pawna.

6. Sunrise Photography

The sunrise over Pawna Lake — with Tikona Fort silhouetted against the orange sky — is one of the most photographed scenes in Maharashtra. Set your alarm for 5:30 AM and walk to the water's edge.

7. Swimming (Seasonal)

Swimming in Pawna Lake is allowed in certain areas around the lake — the water is clean and calm. Best in the post-monsoon season (October–November) when the lake is full. Always supervise children and avoid strong currents near the dam.

8. Stargazing

Pawna Lake sits far from city light pollution, making it one of the best stargazing locations near Pune. On clear winter nights (November–February) the Milky Way is visible. The open lake view to the south gives an unobstructed horizon. A blanket on the deck and a clear sky is all you need.

9. Birdwatching

The Pawna Lake area attracts a variety of resident and migratory birds. Kingfishers, herons, egrets and cormorants are common along the shore. During the winter months, migratory ducks and waders arrive at the lake. The scrub and farmland around the lake also has raptors — watch for black-winged kites and shikras in the mornings.
