Things To Do in Lavasa
Lavasa is India's first planned hill city, built along the shores of Warasgaon Lake in the Sahyadris. 60 km from Pune, it offers a distinctive blend of lake activities, forest trails and hill scenery — with the added benefit of good infrastructure and some of the darkest skies in the Pune district.
1. Boating on Warasgaon Lake
The centrepiece of Lavasa is the massive Warasgaon reservoir. Speedboat rides, paddle boats and kayaking are available from the main promenade. The lake stretches kilometres into forested hills — a motorboat ride at sunset, when the water reflects the surrounding hills, is one of the best experiences here.
2. Walk the Dasve Promenade
The lakeside promenade is Lavasa's signature attraction — colourful Italian-inspired buildings face the lake and the walkway is lined with cafes, restaurants and shops. Best experienced in the early morning or early evening when the light is soft and the crowds are thinner.
3. Stargazing
The hills surrounding Lavasa are at significant elevation with low light pollution — making the area excellent for naked-eye stargazing. The forest edges and lakeside areas away from the promenade offer clear horizon-to-horizon views. October through March is best, when the skies are typically clear and dry.
4. Birdwatching
The forests surrounding Lavasa are part of the Sahyadri foothills ecosystem and are rich in birdlife. The lake itself attracts waterbirds — kingfishers, herons, egrets and various ducks in winter. Forest walks in the early morning (6–8 AM) are most productive for woodland species including Malabar whistling thrush, tickell's blue flycatcher, purple sunbird and various warblers.
5. Cycling and Mountain Biking
Lavasa has dedicated cycling trails through the surrounding hills. Rental cycles and mountain bikes are available near the promenade. Trails range from easy lakeside paths to more challenging forest climbs. The road circuit around the lake is a popular early morning ride.
6. Drive the Lavasa–Tamhini–Mulshi Circuit
One of the great drives of the Western Ghats — drive from Lavasa through Temghar Dam, continue on the Tamhini Ghat road toward Mulshi, and loop back to Pune via Paud Road. Total circuit: approximately 100 km, 3–4 hours. Best during monsoon or early post-monsoon (July–October) when waterfalls are active on the Tamhini stretch.
7. Zip-lining and Adventure Activities
An adventure zone near the lake offers zip-lining, rappelling and wall climbing — good for groups and families.
