Things To Do in Mulshi

Mulshi is Pune's quieter, more beautiful alternative to Lonavala. With a massive reservoir, dense forests, the Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary and zero commercial chaos, it's the ideal weekend destination for those who want nature without the crowds.

1. Kayaking and Boating on Mulshi Lake

Mulshi Lake (formed by Mulshi Dam) is one of the largest reservoirs near Pune. Several resorts and activity camps offer kayaking, rowing and motorboat rides. The lake is particularly stunning during monsoon when the water level is at its peak and the surrounding hills turn vivid green.

2. Drive Through Tamhini Ghat

The Tamhini Ghat road from Mulshi toward the Konkan coast is considered one of the most scenic drives in Maharashtra. The 30 km stretch through dense rainforest has waterfalls at every turn during monsoon and extraordinary valley views year-round. Best driven July through October.

3. Stargazing

Mulshi's low light pollution and elevated terrain make it one of the best spots for stargazing near Pune. On clear nights between October and March, the Milky Way is clearly visible from open lawns and rooftop terraces. Many CosmicStays properties here are specifically chosen for their open skies and minimal surrounding light.

4. Birdwatching in Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary

Mulshi borders the Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary — one of the richest bird habitats in the Western Ghats. Over 230 species have been recorded here including Malabar hornbill, Indian pitta, Malabar trogon, paradise flycatcher, various kingfishers and several endemic Western Ghats species. Early morning walks (6–8 AM) along the forest edge near the dam are most productive. October through April is best for resident species; July–August for monsoon migrants including Indian pitta.

5. Trek to Tung Fort

Tung Fort is a small but rewarding hill fort about 15 km from Mulshi. The 45-minute trek from the base village offers excellent views of Pawna Lake and the Sahyadri range. An easy to moderate climb suitable for beginners. Best October through February.

6. Visit Mulshi Dam

The dam is worth a visit — particularly during monsoon when the overflow gates open and water rushes down the spillway. The road across the dam offers views of the lake on one side and the Mula river valley on the other.

7. Rafting on the Mula River

Several operators near Mulshi offer white-water rafting on the Mula river during and after monsoon (July–October). A 6 km stretch with a mix of gentle rapids and calm pools — suitable for beginners.

8. Bonfire Nights

With dark skies and cool temperatures year-round, evenings at a Mulshi villa typically involve a bonfire, stargazing and the sound of the forest. Most CosmicStays properties in Mulshi can arrange bonfires on request.
