Best Stargazing Spots Near Pune & Mumbai — Dark Sky Guide 2026
Maharashtra has some of the best accessible dark skies in peninsular India. The Sahyadri range naturally blocks city glow, and once you're past 50 km from Pune or 90 km from Mumbai, the sky transforms dramatically.
This guide covers the top locations with Bortle ratings, driving distances, and the specific objects you can see from each.
Understanding the Bortle Scale
The Bortle scale measures sky darkness from 1 (perfectly dark) to 9 (inner city). As a reference:
- Class 1–2: Milky Way casts shadows. Zodiacal light visible. Extremely rare.
- Class 3–4: Milky Way clearly visible with structure. Most deep-sky objects visible to naked eye.
- Class 5–6: Milky Way visible but washed out. Only bright nebulae visible.
- Class 7–9: Light-polluted urban sky. Only the Moon, planets, and brightest stars.
Pune city is roughly Class 7. Mumbai is Class 8–9. Your goal is to get to Class 4 or better.
1. Velhe — Bortle Class 2 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Distance: 60 km from Pune via Panshet Dam Road
Drive time: 90 minutes
Best season: November–April (dry season)
Velhe is Maharashtra's best-kept stargazing secret. The valley sits at 750 metres with the Sahyadri range on three sides blocking almost all city glow. On a moonless night in November or December, the Milky Way is not just visible — it's overwhelming. The dark lane, star clouds, and the Great Rift are plainly visible to the naked eye.
What you'll see:
- Full Milky Way band with dark nebulae
- Andromeda Galaxy (M31) as a faint smudge
- The Orion Nebula (M42) in winter — spectacular even with naked eye
- Pleiades, Hyades star clusters
- Zodiacal light in February–March (cone of light rising from the west after sunset)
Where to stay: Several small homestays in Velhe village. No luxury villas yet — this is grassroots territory. Bring your own equipment.
2. Pawna Lake — Bortle Class 3 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Distance: 65 km from Pune · 120 km from Mumbai
Drive time: 90 min from Pune · 2.5 hrs from Mumbai
Best season: October–May
Pawna Lake's main stargazing advantage is the open water. The lake creates a wide, flat horizon with no trees or buildings interrupting the view. Combined with the elevation (650 m) and distance from city lights, this is the most popular dark sky destination in Maharashtra for a reason.
What you'll see:
- Milky Way from August to December (with moon-free nights)
- Jupiter and Saturn prominently visible in summer/autumn
- Shooting stars from the Perseids (August) and Geminids (December)
- ISS passes — check Heavens-Above for timings specific to Pawna coordinates
Pro tip: Lake-facing villas offer the best views — the northern and western horizons over the water are pristine. The hills block some southern horizon but it barely matters.
3. Mulshi Dam — Bortle Class 3 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Distance: 45 km from Pune
Drive time: 75 minutes
Best season: October–February
Mulshi is the closest proper dark sky site to Pune. Dense teak forest surrounds the dam on three sides, and the watershed protection zone keeps construction (and lights) minimal. The atmosphere here is also cleaner due to the forest — important for transparency.
What you'll see:
- Scorpius rising in the southeast in summer — one of the most dramatic constellations
- Sagittarius and the galactic centre in July–August
- Omega Centauri globular cluster in April–May (low in the south, needs binoculars)
- The Carina Nebula in binoculars in winter
Where to stay: Multiple villa stays in Mulshi — look for properties on the dam ridge with unobstructed southern sky views.
4. Kamshet — Bortle Class 4 ⭐⭐⭐
Distance: 45 km from Pune · 80 km from Mumbai
Drive time: 60 min from Pune · 90 min from Mumbai
Best season: October–May
Kamshet is better known for paragliding but the paragliding site — a large flat valley at 600 m — is also an excellent stargazing meadow. The wide open horizon in all directions makes it ideal for watching meteor showers where you want all-sky coverage.
What you'll see:
- All major meteor showers (good all-sky horizon)
- Planets tracking across the ecliptic
- Satellite passes (lots of Starlink visible)
5. Rajmachi via Lonavala — Bortle Class 3 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Distance: 80 km from Mumbai · 70 km from Pune
Drive time: 2 hours from Mumbai
Best season: November–May (avoid monsoon completely — the trail becomes dangerous)
Rajmachi fort sits at the top of a ridge with 360° views. The elevation (820 m) reduces atmospheric turbulence and the total absence of roads — you either trek or take a 4x4 — means zero local light sources. This is the closest thing to a true expedition sky near Mumbai.
What you'll see:
- 360° Milky Way arc in winter
- The Orion Nebula is stunning here in December
- Perseus double cluster with naked eye
- Multiple satellites and ISS passes per night
Where to stay: Homestays in Udhewadi village at the base of the fort. Basic but authentic. Rooftop access available at most.
Equipment Recommendations
You don't need expensive gear for a rewarding night. In order of impact:
- Naked eye — Start here. Your eyes adapt to darkness and reveal thousands of stars.
- Binoculars 10x50 — Transforms the Milky Way. Opens up star clusters, nebulae, and the Andromeda Galaxy.
- Red flashlight — Essential. Preserves night vision.
- Stellarium app — Free planetarium app. Use it at home before your trip; using your phone at the site kills your night vision.
- Telescope — Only useful if you have experience setting it up. A GoTo mount helps enormously.
When to Go
Best months overall: November, December, January, February
Avoid: June, July, August (monsoon — cloudy 80% of nights)
Wildcard months: September, October — post-monsoon clarity can produce spectacular nights but still unpredictable
The absolute best window is a moonless night in November or December, mid-week, after a few days of dry weather. Check cloud cover forecasts (Windy.com or Ventusky) for your specific location 24 hours before you go.
Bortle ratings are approximate based on Light Pollution Map (lightpollutionmap.info) data. Actual conditions vary by night. Always check weather and moon phase before travelling.
