Fireflies Festival 2026 Near Pune & Mumbai 2025 — Where to See Fireflies in Maharashtra

Fireflies light up the Sahyadri forests every year in late May and early June. Here's where to see fireflies near Pune and Mumbai, when to go, and where to stay near the best spots.

Fireflies Festival 2026 Near Pune & Mumbai 2025 — Where to See Fireflies in Maharashtra

Every year, for roughly two weeks at the cusp of the monsoon, the forests of the Western Ghats turn into something out of a fairy tale. Thousands of fireflies — Pteroptyx and Photinus species — emerge from the undergrowth at dusk and fill the tree line with synchronised, pulsing green light. It lasts for about 15 minutes each night and no photograph truly captures it.

This is Maharashtra's fireflies festival season: the last week of May and the first week of June. The timing is tied precisely to the first rains of the pre-monsoon — once the soil gets its first proper moisture and humidity climbs past 80%, the adult fireflies emerge in synchrony to mate.

When Are Fireflies Active Near Pune and Mumbai?

Peak window: 22 May – 10 June (approximately)

The emergence is triggered by the first pre-monsoon showers, not a fixed calendar date, but in Maharashtra this almost always falls within this two-week window. The display happens only at dusk — roughly 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm after sunset. After that, activity drops sharply.

The window is narrow. Miss it by a week and you will see nothing. Book early.

The Famous Spots (We Don't Have Properties There)

Bhandardara and Purushwadi have become the most Googled fireflies destinations in Maharashtra, and they genuinely are spectacular. Bhandardara's lake-edge forest and Purushwadi village both see incredible firefly densities. If those are on your radar, they're worth doing.

But they're also extremely crowded during the peak two weeks. Purushwadi in particular now runs organised overnight camps that book out weeks in advance.

Where CosmicStays Has Properties — Equal Firefly Density, Far Fewer Crowds

The Western Ghats ridge that produces fireflies near Bhandardara and Purushwadi runs continuously south through Velhe, Mulshi, Panshet, and the hills above Tamhini Ghat. The forest type, humidity, and altitude are comparable — and firefly density is just as high. The difference is you're watching them from the garden of a private villa instead of a crowded campsite.

Velhe and the Panshet–Mulshi Belt

The forests around Velhe, Mulshi dam, and Panshet reservoir are dense mixed deciduous woodland with teak, mango, and jamun that fireflies favour. Guests at properties in this belt regularly spot fireflies in the garden and along the treelines on the property boundary during the last week of May and first week of June. Some years the display starts as early as 20 May when the pre-monsoon arrives early.

Distances from cities:

  • Velhe belt: ~55–65 km from Pune (90 min), ~180 km from Mumbai (3.5 hrs)
  • Mulshi / Panshet: ~40–55 km from Pune (75–90 min), ~150 km from Mumbai (3 hrs)

Tamhini and Kolad Adjacent Properties

Properties closer to Tamhini Ghat and the Kolad belt also sit within the firefly zone. The Tamhini plateau gets heavy pre-monsoon humidity, and the dense canopy here produces some of the most concentrated firefly activity in the region. These are also excellent for guests coming from Mumbai — the Pune–Mumbai Expressway makes the approach straightforward.

What Makes a Good Firefly Sighting?

  • No moon or thin crescent: Full moon nights wash out the display. Check the lunar calendar. The last week of May 2025 coincides with a waning crescent — near ideal.
  • Humidity above 75%: The day after the first light rain is usually the best night.
  • Edge habitat: Fireflies concentrate where open grassland or field meets forest — exactly where most villa gardens are.
  • No artificial light: Turn off outdoor lights and stay off your phone screen. Your eyes take 10 minutes to adjust.
  • Stand still and wait: The synchrony builds slowly. Walk into it quietly.

How to Plan Your Trip

Timing strategy: Watch weather forecasts for Pune from 15 May onwards. A shower followed by clear skies is the ideal sequence — humid air, no cloud cover. Book a 2-night stay for the last week of May so you have two chances.

What to bring:

  • Closed shoes or rubber slippers (wet grass, occasional mud)
  • Light rain jacket (pre-monsoon showers pass quickly)
  • No white flashlights — red light only if needed
  • Insect repellent (mosquitoes are active at the same time as fireflies)

Photography: Fireflies are genuinely difficult to photograph well. You need ISO 1600–3200, aperture f/2.8 or wider, and a 15–30 second exposure on a stable surface. Phone cameras almost never capture them satisfactorily. A mirrorless or DSLR on a small tripod is worth bringing. But honestly — put the camera down for at least the first 10 minutes and just watch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a paid festival or ticketed event? No. Fireflies are a natural phenomenon. Some operators near Bhandardara and Purushwadi charge for guided walks, but the fireflies themselves cost nothing to see. Staying at a property in the right zone means you walk into your garden at dusk.

Are fireflies harmful? No. They don't bite, sting, or swarm. Adults don't even eat — they live only to mate and die within days. The light is their mating signal.

Can I see fireflies in Pune city? Rarely, and only in heavily vegetated areas. The combination of light pollution and reduced humidity means urban sightings are isolated. You need to be 40–60 km from the city.

Do fireflies appear every single night during the window? Activity peaks during the first 7–10 days after emergence and tapers off. Within those nights, cloudy or rainy nights suppress the display. Your best strategy is 2+ nights to improve your chances.

Is it safe to walk outside at night during the pre-monsoon? Yes, on villa grounds. Stick to paths and garden areas — the early monsoon activates snakes as well as fireflies, so walking into dense undergrowth after dark is not recommended.
