Two things to read from that table. First, the top areas are not simply better birded — they hold more habitats. Mulshi combines evergreen forest, lake, cultivation and scrub within a short drive, so its list is naturally longer than a plateau town's. Second, the "rarely recorded" column is where the interest is: Mulshi and Pawna each hold 32 species that turn up infrequently, while Velhe holds two.
Mulshi and Tamhini — the richest
326 species. Wet evergreen forest on the Ghats crest, dropping to lake and farmland below. This is the only area within easy reach that reliably holds the Western Ghats endemics — Malabar Whistling-Thrush, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Crimson-backed Sunbird.
Go early; the Tamhini road fills with day-trippers by mid-morning and the birds go quiet with them.
Pawna — the surprise
325 species, essentially level with Mulshi and far less associated with birding in most people's minds. The lake brings wintering ducks and waders, and the surrounding country adds the dry-scrub set.
It is also the most convenient serious birding from the Mumbai side.
Lavasa — underrated
294 species across the Warasgaon backwaters and the wooded slopes above. Quieter than Mulshi and easier walking than Tamhini.
Pune — better than it sounds
257 species within 25 km of the city, which surprises people. The hills and lakes on the city's edge carry a genuine list, and it is the one area here you can bird before work. Note its peak is December to February rather than the January-and-March pattern of the hills.
Mahabaleshwar — the hill-station set
245 species, and a different community from everywhere else on this list because it sits higher and further south, in Satara district. If you are working through the region's birds, this is the one that adds species the others do not.

Lonavala and Kamshet — the easy option
189 species. A smaller list, but the shortest drive from Mumbai and the easiest to do as a half-day. Plateau grassland for larks, pipits and wintering harriers, with wooded valleys below the edge.

176 species, the smallest list here, and the emptiest trails. Below Torna and Rajgad, with the Panshet backwaters for water birds. Go for solitude rather than for numbers.
When to go, everywhere
January is the peak month at almost every site, with December and March close behind. Winter migrants are in, mornings are cold and still, and visibility is at its best.
Monsoon counts drop sharply — but read that carefully. Far fewer people go out birding between June and September, so the low numbers reflect observer effort as much as bird numbers. The birds are breeding and vocal; you simply cannot see them through the rain.
Where to stay
Every area here rewards being in position before sunrise, which is hard on a day trip from either city.
