Mumbai birders have a choice most Indian cities do not: mudflats and mangroves on the doorstep, and genuine Western Ghats forest two to three hours east. This guide is about the second — the weekend trip inland, where the endemics are.
Why go inland
The city's own wetlands are superb for waders and flamingos in winter, and nothing here argues against them. But the Ghats hold a completely different set of birds: hornbills, whistling thrushes, forest babblers and sunbirds that do not occur on the coast at all. One weekend in the hills adds species you will not find in a year around the creeks.
Lonavala and Kamshet
The closest good birding on the expressway, and the easiest weekend you can plan — under three hours, plenty of places to stay, and you can bird the plateau at dawn and be home the same evening if you must.
The plateau grasslands hold larks, pipits and wintering harriers; the wooded valleys below the edge hold forest species. 189 species have been recorded around here, with January and March the strongest months.

Pawna
Twenty minutes off the Lonavala road and a noticeably richer list — 325 species, of which 32 are rarely recorded, so there is genuine reward for a patient morning. The lake edge brings ducks, waders and kingfishers in winter; the surrounding scrub holds the dry-country birds.
Camping is popular here, so bird early and pick the quieter arms of the lake.
Mulshi and Tamhini
The best of the lot, and the reason to make it an overnight rather than a day trip: 326 species, the highest of any area we cover. Tamhini is wet evergreen forest holding the Ghats endemics; Mulshi below it offers open water and cultivation, so you can work two habitats in one morning.
Four hours from Mumbai, which is exactly why you should sleep nearby — the forest is worth being in at first light, not at eleven.
Lavasa and Velhe
Further south and quieter. Lavasa holds 294 species across the lake backwaters and wooded slopes. Velhe, below Torna and Rajgad, is the least visited of the areas we cover — 176 species and usually nobody else on the track.

Planning the weekend
The realistic shape of a Mumbai birding weekend:
- Leave Friday evening. Driving out on Saturday morning costs you the best hours of the best day.
- Saturday dawn at the forest site, first light to about ten, then stop.
- Saturday afternoon is for resting. Very little moves.
- Late afternoon at a lake or open habitat, where birds stay active longer.
- Sunday dawn for whatever you missed, then drive back before the expressway fills.
When to go
December to March is the season across every area — the month counts peak in January almost everywhere, with December and March close behind. Migrants are in, mornings are still, and the drive is pleasant.
The monsoon transforms the Ghats and makes birding hard. If you go between June and September, go for the landscape and treat the birds as a bonus.
Where to stay
Every site above is better at first light, and first light is three hours from Mumbai. Staying nearby is the difference between birding the good hours and arriving after they have gone.

Is it worth going in the monsoon? For scenery, yes. For birding, not really — visibility is poor and trails are difficult. The low species counts recorded in those months partly reflect how few people are out submitting records, not only how few birds are about.
What about birding inside Mumbai? Excellent in its own right, particularly for waders and flamingos in winter. It is simply a different set of birds from the Ghats, which is why the weekend trip is worth making.
